Fortunately, Mike never had to charge the LED headlamp at the same time that he was hiking, but he did take advantage of the charging feature while in his tent at night. In almost three years of use, we have never had any issues with charging (other than losing the cord).Ī few features we really like about the BioLite: it has a battery indicator light, a lock to prevent accidentally turning it on, and you can charge it while in use. We think at this point, most people are familiar enough with lining up pins from using cell phones and other USB rechargeable devices that this won’t be a problem.

However, some older reviews by professional media found it difficult to align the pins correctly. We found it easy to pop off the protective case on the BioLite 330 and insert the USB charger. We like that you don’t have to remove the battery to charge it, unlike the Petzl Actik Core, our recommended Best for Camping winner (see review below). The BioLite is charged with a micro USB cable that can be plugged into the battery pack on the back of the headlamp band.

He would top off the BioLite’s power at night with a portable battery. During testing, the battery never died, even when used for night hiking for several hours, setting up, and breaking up camp every day.

The BioLite 330 has 3.5 hours of battery life at full power and 40 hours at low power. One nice feature is that the light does a quick double flash when the dimmable light reaches its maximum or minimum power. He only used the red light mode when in camp around other hikers.īoth the spot and floodlight modes are dimmable. He used the spot light at approximately one-half or three-quarter power to night hike and the floodlight mode at the lowest power when in his tent. Mike didn't need to use the brightest light setting, even while night hiking. He found that the BioLite’s 330 lumens were more than bright enough to night hike safely, seldom using the maximum brightness setting. Towards the end of Mike’s PCT Southbound hikes, days became shorter in November, and night hiking became a necessity. Our testers hiked 3-4 hours a day with it for several months to put this headlamp to full use. We like that it doesn’t have extra modes that are rarely useful. As with our Best Headlamp for Battery Life, the Black Diamond Spot 350 (see review below), we think these are the essential lighting features that every good headlamp should have. The BioLite 330 has five modes: spot, flood, spot+flood, strobe, and red light. In earlier versions of this guide, we were hesitant to recommend a rechargeable headlamp as an overall winner it felt too new, and up until the BioLite 330 came along, many rechargeable headlamps at the time lacked the brightness or battery life we look for in a quality headlamp.īut these days, almost every backpacker and those on overnight trips carry an external battery. It’s an incredibly lightweight bright LED headlamp at only 2.43 ounces (including battery) that's held up to the test of time and over 5,000 miles of backpacking. The BioLite 330 doesn’t have that annoying “wobble” of some headlamps used for running. That comfort is one of the reasons why we think the BioLite 330 is also the best headlamp for night runners that need a secure and pain-free fit. The BioLite Headlamp 330’s comfort and fit put it above any headlamp we’ve tested. Weight (including batteries): 2.43 ounces Power Source: USB Rechargeable Lithium-Ion battery The Storm 400's PowerTap Technology enables you to quickly and easily access maximum brightness with the touch of a finger.THE BEST HEADLAMP: BIOLITE HEADLAMP 330 THE BEST RECHARGEABLE HEADLAMP: BIOLITE HEADLAMP 330 THE BEST BACKPACKING HEADLAMP: BIOLITE HEADLAMP 330 The headlamp has our Brightness Memory feature, which allows you to turn the light on and off at a chosen brightness without reverting back to the default, full power setting. The Storm 400 also has three different colored night vision modes and peripheral white lighting for close-range activities like carefully re-racking for the final summit pitch in the dark. In addition, the updated optical efficiency not only provides brighter light, but also saves battery life that you can now easily track with a six-setting, three-LED battery meter. With a new, compact body, the Storm 400 is more ergonomic, and the updated user interface includes a secondary switch for easy mode selection. The Storm 400 is engineered for epics in all conditions, featuring a robust waterproof/dustproof housing and 400 lumens of bright light.
